In this article I want to tell you about three simple objects that you can buy which will really help you instead of giving you rather banal advice about parenting tips for ADHD!
The first object is a stability ball. Research has now shown that when a child with ADHD is allowed to make some movement when concentrating on homework, then his brain is helped to focus. These should also be bought by schools. How many times have we drummed our fingers, twisted our hair or doodled when doing a mental task or when we had to sit through a boring meeting. This secondary activity did not prevent us from listening and maybe it stopped us from falling asleep!
There is quite a lot of research on this. Dr. John Ratey has written a book called Spark in which he talks about how a secondary physical activity such as chewing gum, actually increases the dopamine and norepinephrine brain transmitters. Now these are essential for helping us to focus and to pay attention.
In fact, the ADHD drugs also have this effect. Well, I personally would much rather that the kids were wiggling around on a stability ball instead of becoming zombie like on certain psychostimulants.
This is exactly what teachers did at an elementary school in Morris, Minnesota recently. They bought stability balls and allowed the kids to sit on them and fidget to their heart’s content while doing classroom tasks. These were kids in the third and sixth grade classes and the ones with ADHD were behaving much better and wandering around the classroom much less than before. The balls can give these kids that extra space for wriggling than a chair. So, why not buy one for your home as well?
You will probably have read lots of articles on parenting tips, ADHD issues and treatment problems. The sad fact of the matter is that very few articles actually give enough attention to the organization of your home. You see having an ordered household is a great way to help ADHD kids find things and it makes it so much easier for them to do the tasks, get organized for school and find their toys, books and clothes.
One of the best ways to organize the ADHD friendly home is to have a timer or several of them at strategic places so that they serve as reminders to change activity, get ready for a meal or bedtime and so on. This is helping the kids to be less distracted but also helps them enormously because tasks have to be broken down and a timer is a great help. I found the ones with the red disc which gradually decreases are great.
The third object to buy is a Wii board. This can really get kids into physical exercise when the weather is very bad. Much better to have them play with this than on a video game or on their playstation. Lots of research shows that physical activity will help to stave off depression but in the case of ADHD, hyperactivity will be reduced and also the quality of sleep will be enhanced.
A great way to empathise with your kids is to try the exercises on the Wii board yourself. It gives you a chance to spend quality time with them which is one of the parenting tips for ADHD which is always mentioned.
So, there you have three objects to buy instead of reading about parenting tips for ADHD. Try these out and see how your ADHD child’s behavior will improve.
